Matt is originally from Canada, and graduated from Queen’s University in 2002. He lived in Hawaii from 2002 to 2011, and relocated with his family to the Pacific Northwest in late summer 2011. Matt received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in the summer of 2017.
His areas of clinical interest are pre and post-operative rehabilitation, aquatic rehabilitation, and return to play testing. He has a passion for working with runners, jumpers, and overhead athletes to improve their performance and keep them competing by addressing biomechanical inefficiencies and dysfunctions. Matt has more than 15 years of experience working with active people across the lifespan, and athletes from grade school to professional level.
In addition to working with patients as a physical therapist, Matt has worked as a consultant for Endless Pools and Intel. He co-developed and taught a continuing education course on ACL rehabilitation for physical therapists and athletic trainers. He has also spoken at local, national, and international conferences and symposiums.
Being involved in sports growing up made a lasting impression on the importance of being active and giving back to the community. Matt is involved with volunteer coaching for soccer and track and field. He is also an emergency medical responder (EMR) and has provided medical venue coverage for several local United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Youth events.
Originally from the East Coast, Matt Whitaker received his professional training at Loma Linda University graduating in 1998 and has lived Utah and California prior to moving to the Northwest in 2016.
His original work focused on neurologic rehabilitation with an emphasis on vestibular and balance dysfunctions. Over the past 10 years his area of care has concentrated on orthopedic conditions with postsurgical and spine dysfunctions areas of particular interest in addition to bike fitting and the young athlete.
Outside of treating patients, Matt has taught physical therapy students both in the classroom and clinically, has lectured to medical students, provided post-graduate continual educational training to physical therapists, directed therapy programs for hospitals and owned a private practice clinic.
Matt understands the needs of both an athlete and those that want to stay active and their desire at any age to return to what they love doing after injury. Having completed multiple Ironman triathlons and marathons he understands the drive and motivations of his patients to optimize their ability
